Alta Public Schools was looking to create a dynamic renovation and expansion of their existing space in Walnut Park, California, for their elementary school Academia Moderna. The building was a former supermarket, an enticing challenge for bringing daylight into what is ordinarily an unforgiving typology. Our proposal was to fill the cavernous space with skylights, offering a milky glow to complement the relatively windowless environment. Soaring ceilings surrounded the new two-story construction, accentuated with 20 foot wide dormers.
