Envisioned as a fantastical reference to the “Chinese umbrella,” the design of the station was to inspire awe upon a guest’s arrival via the Shanghai Metro system. Roughly half of all visitors are expected to come via public transportation when the park opens.
The typical Chinese umbrella is a shading device with 26 spokes. They have been modeled carefully to respect tradition and to accommodate the practical issues associated with the umbrellas, which range in diameter from 10-20 meters. Preliminary structural engineering was included in the design research to size the members appropriately and to provide an accurate representation of how a forest of umbrellas may eventually appear.
